The Örtze rises north of Munster and flows after 54 kilometers, at Winsen, into the Aller. As the largest river in the Lüneburg Südheide, it has a relatively strong gradient with a flow of about 0.70 meters per second and a water depth of 0.5 to 2 meters. Due to its higher flow rate, curvy sections and partly low branches, the Örtze is more difficult for canoeists than the Aller and is not recommended for small children, for example.
The Örtze is part of the European Nature Conservation Network "Natura 2000", which is under special protection under the "Flora-Fauna-Habitat"-directive. For this reason, the river has strict rules for paddling. It is only allowed to paddle there from 16th of May till 14th of October.
Its spectacular course through landscapes and historic villages in the nature Park Südheide has already impressed the poet Hermann Löns more than 100 years ago, so that he even devoted the river its own chapter.
We will gladly arrange for you the concessional transfer by bus or taxi to/from the boat jetty or the place of your choice.
